Pangpang and Yun

Pangpang and Yun are characters I created for my upcoming animation short, “The Night Market”.

Round faced and round eyed, Pangpang is a curious indoor cat who makes the big decision to go outside with his human for the first time. He is bossy, and likes things to go his way. He doesn’t even bother to understand Yun’s interests in other things, aside from food, which is the only selling point of the night market for him. Although he’s expressive with his desires, he is too shy to pursue them himself, and insists on staying within immediate proximity of Yun, whether on her shoulders or in her bag. His design will be very soft looking with rounded lines and warm colors, which reflects his character archetype: The Child. As a character who’s thrown into a completely new world, he is innocent and driven by personal needs only, and powerless to have any real impact.

Yun doesn’t have much of a personality other than being Pangpang’s owner. She makes all the decisions when they explore the night market. Although she initially ignores Pangpang’s complains for food, she clearly loves him as a companion. This is made evident when she makes the decision to bring him along outside, notices a stuffed animal that looks like him, and finally buys him a snack. She is interested in cute, girly things such as clothes and plushies, much to Pangpang’s displeasure. She is young looking, perhaps a teenager or young adult. Her design will contrast Pangpang’s softness with contrast in values and sharper lines and angles. As a foil to Pangpang, her character archetype is The Caregiver. She is the sole caretaker for Pangpang. She protects, transports, and feeds him. Her role in the story is to provide for him, and his role is to be provided for.
